Road crashes are a major cause of death and serious injury among children in NSW. The ‘K-6 Road Safety Education Online Professional Learning’ course helps K-6 teachers understand the specific vulnerabilities of their students as road users in their local school environment, equipping them to address particular risks and promote student safety. The online self-paced learning experience also provides participants with the background knowledge, evidence-based effective pedagogical strategies and practices, and resources to implement an engaging and effective road safety education program that applies a whole-school approach. During the course, participants explore the Transport for NSW approved resource, ‘Safety Town‘.

This two-hour online professional learning course is delivered using a flexible, self-paced delivery model on Canvas. Register here for the course.

These workshops empower teachers to deliver road safety education through the lens of the new PDHPE syllabus and Creative Arts (Drama or Visual Arts). Participants will explore road safety statistics and age-specific insights, learn strategies to integrate safety concepts with art and adapt the evidence-based online resource Safety Town to meet diverse student needs. The workshop will provide participants with the background knowledge and evidence-based effective pedagogical strategies and practices to implement a compelling road safety education program that applies a whole-school approach. Participants will develop innovative art mediums to inspire creativity and design thematic, hands-on projects that promote and incorporate road safety themes. Full-day funded release is available to complete the course.

This professional learning workshop equips teachers with the knowledge and strategies to confidently deliver Road Safety Education aligned to the new Years 7–10 PDHPE syllabus. Participants will explore current road safety issues affecting young people, engage with evidence-based best practice, and understand the value of a whole-school approach. The workshop also supports teachers to unpack syllabus changes, develop effective classroom strategies, and integrate engaging digital resources, including the On The Move online resource, into PDHPE teaching. Full-day funded release is available to complete the course.

A 45-minute webinar on effective senior student road safety education is available for Year 11 and 12 Coordinators. The webinar will cover the following: (i) the latest research and data about the key concerns for young adults as road users; (ii) effective road safety education pedagogy targeting senior school students; (iii) strategies and guidance for creating a whole-school approach to road safety; (iv) resources that can be used to engage Year 11 and 12 students in road safety education; and (v) key road safety messages for secondary students.

The road safety education specialist at Sydney Catholic Schools can also customise face-to-face professional learning workshops to help meet the needs of schools. All customised face-to-face professional learning workshops are typically up to two hours in duration, however they can be extended to 5 hours. Customised professional learning workshops are funded by Transport for NSW and are provided at no cost to schools.
